Positive reinforcement training means that your dog is rewarded for doing the right thing. This method of training makes your dog happy and engaged and has been scientifically proven to reinforce what they learn. They become part of the process of learning because they have to think about what to do next. Punishment for doing the wrong behavior – either verbal or physical, can make a dog shut down, be frustrated or fearful to try new things. Remember that dogs pick up on human frustration and anger so it’s best not to engage in training sessions if you are upset or frustrated.
Try teaching your dog to do something “else” rather than telling them “no”. For example, teach them to stay on a mat when guests arrive or when you are eating at the table. Teach them to watch you when another dog is walking past you. All of these behaviors can be taught in a positive way so that the dog is being rewarded and happy to offer new behavior.
